Skier captures insane Austrian ice halo with all the trimmings on camera

Breathtaking footage of a sun halo taken in the Austrian Alps has appeared on the internet.

The video was shot by Swedish aircraft mechanic Kalle Centergren, who was on a skiing trip and happened to bring along his drone - which he used to film the incredible celestial display.

As everyone knows, the technical term for a halo is a tangent arc, and one of the reasons this one is so spectacular is because it features just about the full spectrum of refracted light phenomena.

What you can see is a 22 degree tangent arc – the central ice halo – accompanied on either side by sun dogs, also called parahelia, or mock suns; they're the crazy-bright lights you can see on either side of the actual sun.

Then there are the parry arcs, which are the rainbow-coloured, kind of arrow-shaped nicks that seem to jut into what could be an extremely rare 46 degree halo, which is the outer ring you can see.

In addition to all this are myriad supralateral and infralateral arcs, and a parahelic circle, because why not?

The white flecks that give the video that pleasant, almost-celluloid look are minute snow crystals flying around in the atmosphere, which are exactly what cause ice halos in the first place.
