Serbian cop no match for snowball-throwing Syrian kids

Refugee camps are not generally thought of as anything but harbours of uncertainty and despair, yet humanity sometimes finds a way to light even the darkest of places, as a video taken inside a Serbian facility shows.

The heart-warming footage, taken from a camp at Sid, west of Belgrade on the locked-down Croatian border, shows a gaggle of young, mostly Syrian children, having a snowball fight with Serbian police.

One officer backed against a wall bears the brunt of the icy barrage, much to the delight of the youngsters, whose joy is palpable as they play in the snow.

Aiding the kids in their attack is another cop who treacherously arms the youngsters with ammo to hurl at his colleague.

The fight, filmed and uploaded to Facebook by Nemanja Bozovic, a co-ordinator who works at the camp, has touched viewers around the world.

At least 10,000 asylum seekers are in Serbia, with many of them becoming stranded en route to the EU after Croatia closed its borders last year as the Refugee Crisis reached boiling point.

By and large the Serbs have welcomed the displaced people with open arms, their compassion informed by the still-fresh horrors of their own history, including the war in Yugoslavia.

Many anecdotes have emerged of the kindness Serbs have shown towards the dispossessed, who have been fed, billeted and comforted in the Balkan nation, with this video proving no exception.
