Prince William wrote to the family of a nurse who took her own life following a prank call by two Australian radio show hosts saying how "unbelievably sad" her death was.

Nurse Jacintha Saldanha committed suicide after she transferred a call from Austereo DJs Mel Greig and Michael Christian onto another nurse who revealed details of the Duchess of Cambridge's condition while she was pregnant with George.

In an interview with the Mail on Sunday, her husband Ben Barboza said he was moved by the letter.

"It is unbelievably sad and we both extend to you and your family our deepest condolences," Prince William wrote to the family.

"We were both very shocked to hear about Jacintha and have been thinking about her a lot recently.

"Many of the nurses spoke highly of her and I'm sure you know how great a nurse she was.

"Jacintha and her colleagues looked after us very well and I am just so sorry that someone who cared for others so much found themselves in a desperate situation."

Mr Barboza said he was still struggling to come to terms with his wife's death.

"I am just really angry, why did they do that?" he said.

"Just a matter of three or four seconds changed our whole life.

"I can't forgive the people who broadcast that."

An inquest into her death ruled it a suicide.

Earlier this year, Greig revealed she was suffering from depression after the infamous prank call.

"Somebody wrote my name in their suicide note," she told the Seven Network.

"That will stay with me forever, but I can move forward."
