One of Spain's leading matadors has had a painful lesson after he turned his back on a 500kg bull on Thursday.

After finishing a series of passes with the black bull, 38-year-old José Tomás began strutting away from the fearsome bovine.

But the bull was not in the mood to surrender, running into Tomas and tossing him over its head several times as the crowd screamed in alarm.

Tomás landed face-down on the dirt and stayed entirely still, but was merely playing dead, returning to his feet the moment he was carried out of the ring.

Despite the scary moment, Tomás returned to the ring later to kill the bull.

He was later diagnosed to have broken a rib in the fall.
