Man drops engagement ring in pond

An English couple have a memorable tale of how they got engaged — but it's less of a modern-day romance and more of "a hilarious comedy of errors".

Sharif Uddin chose a romantic and picturesque spot to propose to Stephanie Jackson, his girlfriend of four years, on April 5: a bridge passing over a pond in Royal Victoria Park in Bath.

But the banker was overcome by nerves as he took the $2500 diamond engagement ring out of its box and it slipped out of his fingers and disappeared into the water below.

Ms Jackson told The Telegraph "there was a lot of swearing" as Mr Uddin, 31, went after the ring, diving into the pond so fast he forgot he still had his mobile phone in his pocket.

The pair bought "sieves and wellies" and launched a desperate search for the ring, which Mr Uddin had specially designed for his beloved.

After scooping mud for almost three hours, the couple finally located their prize.

Ms Jackson's video of the discovery shows her mud-covered hand triumphantly bearing the ring.

A crowd of onlookers reportedly cheered when Mr Uddin retrieved his prize.

"I couldn't believe it when Sharif scooped it out of the mud," said Ms Jackson, 32.

She said she was relieved the "hilarious comedy of errors" had ended well.

"I'll never forget my proposal. It was like a scene out of a movie."
