Champion cyclist Anna Meares will carry the Australian flag into the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony in Glasgow.

Meares, 30, said it was an "incredible thrill" to be named the team's flagbearer early this morning.

"I'm very proud...to be a member of this team," she said on the TODAY show this morning.

The Queenslander has battled back to the top of the cycling world from a number of injuries, including a horrific crash during the cycling World Cup in 2008 when she broke her neck during a collision.

"I've certainly had to face a few adversities and challenges," she said.

Meares has won two Olympic gold medals, including in the women's sprint event at the 2012 London Games.

She will compete in the track sprint and 500-metre time trial at the Glasgow Games, which open this week.
