Airline Jet2 has promised it "will not hesitate" to prosecute a woman accused of disrupting a flight and threatening to kill everybody on board.

Witnesses claimed the woman tried to open the aircraft doors during the flight, and attempted to rush the cockpit.

She was restrained by passengers and crew members.

Two RAF Typhoon fighters were scrambled to intercept the passenger plane, which was en route from the UK to Dalaman in Turkey, at the weekend.

The fighters escorted the plane safely back to Stansted Airport near London.

Police arrested a 25-year-old woman on suspicion of common assault, criminal damage, and endangering an aircraft.

Jet2 said it was assisting police inquiries into what the airline called "appalling and dangerous behaviour".

"For years we have been highlighting just how serious the consequences of disruptive passenger behaviour can be," a spokesperson said in a statement.

"These consequences include huge fines, lifetime bans and court action.

"They now also include the authorities having to scramble fighter jets to escort commercial aircraft, proof that this behaviour must stop now."

One passenger, Amiy Varol, claimed on Twitter that the woman had been "screaming" and "biting people" and needed six people to restrain her.

London Underground employee and former bouncer Steven Brown, who claimed to be one of the people who helped restrain the woman, told The Sun she had "super strength".

"She was only petite but she had the strength of a fully-grown man," he said.
