Trump defends Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh in extraordinary press conference

US President Donald Trump has defended his Supreme Court nominee implicated in sexual misconduct by lashing out at his own accusers.

A woman named Julie Swetnick came forward overnight to make Julie Swetnick against Judge Brett Kavanaugh while he was a teenager.

But the current appeals court judge declared in a statement: "This is ridiculous and from the Twilight Zone. I don't know who this is and this never happened."

Trump today described accuser Julie Swetnick's lawyer Michael Avenatti as a "con artist".

Mr Avenatti is also representing Stormy Daniels, the porn star who signed a Stormy Daniels.

In a rare solo press conference held in New York today, the president decried "false accusations" made against him.

"I've been accused…by four or five women, who got paid a lot of money to make up stories about me who made a lot of money," Trump said.

"And the mainstream media refused to put it on television."

Trump did not specify which of the 22 women who have accused him of sexual misconduct were paid for their allegations.

But in 2005, Trump was caught on a live microphone bragging about groping women.

Trump said he may change his mind on Judge Kavanaugh after hearing the Senate testimony of the judge's first accuser Christine Blasey Ford.

But he lavished praise on his Supreme Court nominee.

"He's one of the highest quality human beings," Trump said.

"He's a tremendous man. He's a tremendous genius."

Trump decried the Democrats opposed to Kavanaugh's nomination as "obstructionists" and "con artists".

"If we brought George Washington here, the Democrats would vote against him," the president said.

"And he may have a bad past, who knows. George Washington would be voted against one hundred percent by (Senate Minority Leader Chuck) Schumer and the con artists."

Judge Kavanaugh and Dr Ford will face a Senate committee tomorrow to be questioned on the attempted rape accusations she has levelled against him.

The Senate committee has declined to subpoena other potential witnesses and has scheduled a vote to confirm the judge to the Supreme Court on Friday.
