Donald Trump has confiscated the coat from a man and had him thrown out into freezing temperatures for protesting at a rally.

The Republican presidential candidate's attempt to screen attendees to his rally in Burlington, Vermont, overnight were unsuccessful and his speech was plagued by chants from the crowd.

Thousands had stood in line for hours after the campaign distributed 20,000 free tickets to the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts, which has just 1400 seats. To whittle down the crowd, those who had waited in the cold were asked as they entered the venue whether or not they supported Trump, the Associated Press reports.

Those who said they didn't were escorted away, though some had obviously lied as the event was railroaded by protests.

Trump lost his temper at one protester, yelling for security to "get him out of here".

"Don't give him his coat. Keep his coat," Trump said to cheers from the crowd.

"Confiscate his coat. You know, it's about 10 degrees below zero outside.

"No, you can keep his coat. Tell him we'll send it to him in a couple of weeks."

Burlington is the hometown of Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, and many of the demonstrators were supporters of his campaign.
