Today in History - September 2: Feuding bikie gangs turn pub carpark into a battlefield
On September 2, 1984, a confrontation between warring outlaw motorbike gangs, or bikies in south-western Sydney, left seven people dead.
The shootout between the Bandidos and the Comancheros, known as The Milperra Massacre, turned the carpark of the Viking Tavern pub into a war zone.
The battle took place amid a group of innocent bystanders who were enjoying a family day out to celebrate Father's Day in the tavern carpark.
Among the dead was an innocent 15-year-old girl.
The deadly shootout shocked Australians and triggered a massive police investigation that culminated in about 31 people being tried for murder.
Nine men were convicted of the seven murders and 21 men convicted on seven counts of manslaughter.
German teenage pilot Mathias Rust, who famously flew his small civilian plane into the heart of Moscow during the Cold War, was put on trial by Soviet officials on September 2, 1987.
The 18 year old was convicted of breaching the Soviet Union's border and "malicious hooliganism". He spent 14 months in a Moscow prison before he was released.
