Sid Vicious of the punk band The Sex Pistols on October 12, 1978, was charged with the murder of his girlfriend Nancy Spungen in New York city.

Spungen's body was found in her hotel room with a knife wound, while Vicious was walking in a nearby corridor. Her death followed a drug-fuelled party hosted by the couple.

The musician died of a heroin overdose while on bail in February 1979 before the case went to trial.

Vicious (left) had become internationally famous as a member of the Sex Pistols, though he hadn't played a single note on their only album.

Theories about what caused Spungen's death continued to linger. Some said her stabbing was a robbery or drug deal gone wrong, or that she took her own life.
