TODAY IN HISTORY: Beach photo reveals awful and bizarre fate of woman missing for decades
Thai masseuse Anocha Panjoy vanished after leaving her apartment in Macau on May 21, 1978.
She had told friends she was going to a beauty parlour, but no other information was given.
And for 26 years there was nothing to indicate what had happened to Panjoy.
But in 2004, the unlikeliest of sources revealed Panjoy's fate.
Nearly 40 years after deserting from the US Army and crossing into North Korea, Charles Robert Jenkins was allowed to leave the country.
Jenkins revealed that in his time in North Korea, he lived next door to Panjoy.
Panjoy had been abducted from a beach in Macau and taken to North Korea.
Once there, Panjoy was forced to marry another US defector, Larry Abshier (pictured).
When Abshier died in 1983, she married an East German businessman, Jenkins said.
But Jenkins knew little about Panjoy's background, and it wasn't until a fluke chance that her family learned what happened to her.
Jenkins showed a photo of himself and his wife on a beach in North Korea during a television interview in 2005.
Panjoy's brother then recognised her in the background.
North Korea has denied abducting Panjoy and has given no information about her condition. It is not known if she is still alive.
