TODAY IN HISTORY: FBI closes in on celebrity parents and their giant bribery scam
The US college admissions bribery scam swept up more celebrities on May 13, 2019, when actress and Desperate Housewives star Felicity Huffman, left, pleaded guilty for her part in the scandal.
Just weeks earlier actress Lori Loughlin, the star of sitcom Full House, and her husband are pleading not guilty to charges they took part. They later agreed to a plea deal with prosecutors.
The FBI discovered William "Rick" Singer was the mastermind of the college admissions scandal. It involved wealthy parents, desperate to get their children into elite universities, paying huge sums to cheat on tests, bribe university coaches who had influence over admissions and then lie about it to authorities.
He was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison in January 2023. For their parts, Huffman was sentenced to 14 days and Loughlin received two months behind bars.
Australian farmer and amateur astronomer John Tebbutt discovered The Great Comet - the brightest recorded in the 19th century - on May 13, 1861.
Tebbutt made detailed observations of comets and asteroids from his sheep farm in Windsor, NSW. In recognition of his scientific contributions, his portrait adorned the back of the $100 banknote from 1984 to 1996.
