Self-styled Bishop held prayer meetings in 'house of horrors'
On March 25, 1987, Philadelphia police, responding to an emergency call, raided the home of serial killer Gary Heidnik and uncovered a shocking crime scene.
In the basement of his house was a torture chamber with three women chained to a pipe. A fourth had managed to escape and alert authorities.
Heidnik was a former mental patient who had inherited a family fortune and established his own church, appointing himself as Bishop.
He lured his victims off the street before subjecting them to torture and other abuse before killing them.
Heidnik would hold prayer meetings for unsuspecting worshippers in the living room of the house, while his captives were held beneath it.
Heidnik was later found guilty and convicted of murder. He received a death sentence, and was executed in 1999.
