Colombia were heavy favourites in the match against the USA, but Escobar's own goal put the Americans in front.
The defeat knocked Colombia out of the tournament.
The following night Humberto Castro Munoz was arrested and admitted to the murder.
Castro was the bodyguard of a drug cartel who had lost a substantial sum of money betting on Colombia to win.
While his boss was suspected of ordering the murder, prosecutors were unable to prove it.
Castro was sentenced to 43 years in prison but served just 11.
Witnessing the event was Robert Lincoln, whose father Abraham also been shot while president.
Robert Lincoln would also be present when President William McKinley was murdered 20 years later.
