One nurse, Corazon Amurao, survived because she hid under a bed when Speck was out of the room. It is suspected Speck simply lost count and didn't look for her.

She remained under the bed until 6am, after Speck had left.

Speck was arrested two days later after a doctor recognised his distinctive "born to raise hell" tattoo based on Amurao's police description.

Speck's death sentence was reversed by the Supreme Court. In a re-sentencing, he was given 400 to 1200 years in prison. This was later reduced to 100 to 300 years.

In a video filmed behind bars in 1988, Speck was asked why he murdered the nurses.

"It just wasn't their night."
