Today in History - January 27 | Who really invented the light bulb?
Thomas Edison receives a patent for his light bulb on January 27, 1880.
However, controversy has emerged over a number of Edison's "inventions" since his death, including the light bulb. The Canadian government maintains that its own citizens, Henry Woodward and Mathew Evans, invented the light bulb, but sold the patent to Edison after being unable to make it a commercial success.
Edison himself credited an electrical engineer in his employ, William Hammer, as a "pioneer" of the technology.
Colonel William Nolde was the last official US combat casualty of the Vietnam War on January 27, 1973.
Nolde had served in the Korean War and already completed a tour of duty in Vietnam in 1965. However, in 1972 he was asked to return to the country as a military advisor for the South Vietnamese.
Nolde was killed by artillery fire near An Loc 11 hours before the war's end.

The Paris Peace Accords were also signed on January 27, 1973, to come into effect at 8am the following day.
Nolde's death preceded the treaty's period of effect by 11 hours.
On January 27, 2023, the City of Memphis released footage of police beating Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old black man who fled a traffic stop.
The incident itself took place on January 7, when five police officers, who were also black, pulled Nichols from his car for what they later claimed was reckless driving, and attacked him with pepper spray and a Taser.
Nichols broke free and tried to run, but the officers gave chase and beat him so badly he died in hospital three days later.
On the release of the footage on January 27, mass protests erupted around the US.
Nichols, who suffered from Crohn's disease, worked for FedEx and was an amateur photographer.
A later police review found no probable cause for the traffic stop that ended in his death.
The five officers involved were all fired and charged with second degree murder.
A sixth officer, Preston Hemphill, a white man, who was involved in the initial traffic stop and Taser use, but not the fatal beating, was fired.

The concentration camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated by Soviet troops on January 27, 1945.
About 7000 prisoners remained in the camp, after more than a million were murdered there during the Holocaust and many others forced into a death march.
