Today in History - January 14 | Legend confesses to drug cheating on TV after decade of denial
On January 14, 2013, cyclist Lance Armstrong ended years of denial by admitting to TV host Oprah Winfrey during a interview that he'd used performance-enhancing drugs during his incredible run of seven consecutive Tour de France wins.
Armstrong had previously been globally admired for his sporting achievements, particularly in the context of his battles against cancer.
Armstrong, a cancer survivor, had previously been vociferous in his denials about using anything performance enhancing.
The Summer of Love is considered to have its roots in the seminal "Human Be-In" in San Francisco on January 14, 1967.
The massive counter-cultural gathering drew young people from all over the US and made the Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco synonymous with hippies in the US.
The gathering was initially prompted by a new California law that banned the use of the psychedelic drug LSD the previous October.
The "Be-in" kicked off numerous other Summer of Love events around the US.
It was intended also as a way to reconcile the free-speech and anti-war activists among the US youth with the hippies, who the former viewed as disengaged and un-serious.
Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, daughter of King Frederik IX, ascended the throne on January 14, 1967, becoming Denmark's first ruling Queen since her namesake Margrethe I died in 1412.
She reigned for 52 years.
Frederik immediately became King of Denmark, though Margrethe II has remained in the public eye.
And after that 52 years, to the day, Margrethe II abdicated the throne in favour of her son Frederik X on January 14, 2024.
