Canadian man wanted for shooting three cops

Three Canadian police officers have been shot dead and two others injured in the east coast province of New Brunswick, where authorities have issued a picture of a rifle-wielding suspect.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police says police responded to a call on Wednesday evening about an armed man in the north end of the city of Moncton.

Three of the responding officers were killed and two sustained non-life threatening injuries and were in stable condition.

"I drove by and saw a car with shattered windows, bullet holes, and blood all over the ground," Matt Arsenault told the NY Daily News of the scene left behind.

Police said they were looking for 24-year-old Justin Bourque of Moncton - a city of about 69,000 people about 150 kilometres northeast of the state capital of St John.

The police force tweeted an image of a suspect wearing military camouflage, carrying two guns and a backpack.

Bourque was last seen retreating into woodland surrounding the city.

"We are still actively looking for the shooter," said RCMP Constable Damien Theriault.

"He is believed to still be in the Pinehurst subdivision area of Moncton.

"We are urging people in that area to stay inside and lock their doors and for people to say away from that area."

Police had a number of roads in the city blocked and traffic was backed up on major arteries across the city. Drivers were also asked to stay out of the area.

Moncton Mayor George LeBlanc urged all residents to pay strict attention to the RCMP warnings.

A Facebook page attributed to the alleged killer is littered with anti-cop and pro-gun messages and rantings.

His last posting, written just after 4.30 pm yesterday, contains lyrics from song "Hook in Mouth" by metal band Megadeth.

"You say you've got the answers, well who asked you anyway?," the post read.

"Ever think maybe it was meant to be this way?

"Don't try to fool us, we know the worst is yet to come.

"I believe my kingdom will come."
