The shield that stopped 27 bullets during the Bataclan theatre raid

An image of a shield used during a police intervention at the besieged Bataclan theatre in Paris on November 13 has emerged, revealing in harrowing detail the peril faced by members of the rescue team.

The image, first posted to the website of French newspaper 20 Minutes, shows a towering black Kevlar shield peppered with 27 bullet holes.

The shield was reportedly used by a special forces officer from the Research and Intervention Brigades (BRI) when they entered the Bataclan concert hall at 9.30pm on Friday to rescue the innocent concertgoers being gunned down inside.

Over 1000 fans were attending a concert by California rock group, Eagles of Death Metal, when the gunmen appeared, taking hundreds of concertgoers hostage and killing them at random.

The police are believed to have smuggled 20 hostages out of the venue before the gunmen activated explosive belts and killed themselves.

The assault, which left 89 dead and countless others injured, was part of a series of coordinated terrorist attacks on the French capital, for which terrorist group ISIL has since claimed responsibility.
