A 19-year-old man may have been taking selfies when he fatally shot himself with a gun in Texas on Tuesday.
Deleon Alonso Smith and his cousin were reportedly taking selfies with the gun when it accidentally fired, Houston news station KPRC reported.
The 19-year-old victim was pronounced dead in the bedroom of an apartment after the shooting took place about 1pm, the Houston Police Department advised.
He believed the gun was unloaded, a witness told police.
“The gun then discharged and the victim was struck in the upper body,” Houston police said.
Smith’s uncle, Eric Douglas, told KPRC the family was devastated by the death.
“It’s the worst feeling of my life,” Mr Douglas told KPRC.
Smith was about to start community college on Wednesday, his grandmother Alma Douglas told KPRC.
The police investigation is continuing.
