The Taliban's supreme leader in Afghanistan has reportedly died, according to the Afghan government.

Top sources in the government said the reclusive Mullah Omar had died two to three years ago, the BBC has reported.

However, the sources made no comment as to the manner of his death.

Omar's death has been reported in the past, but this is the first time it has been corroborated by government sources.

The Taliban has not commented on the reports.

Omar has been in hiding for years after the US government placed a US$10 million bounty on his head.

The Taliban leader was allied with al-Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden, prompting the American-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 following the September 11 attacks.
