Enjoy an epic flight over Mars while keeping your feet on Earth

A stunning flyover video of the Martian landscape offers a unique insight into future space tourism.

The private exploration company SpaceX has already booked tourists for a flight around the moon but one dedicated filmmaker has created images of what a similar tour of Mars might be like.

Finland's Jan Frodjman took the images from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's HiRISE camera and transformed them into a stunning video.

He told Wired that it was a long process of adding colour to the black and white photos before stitching them together and rendering them in frames for the 3D effect.

Footage starts with a flight to the Martian moon Phobos before gliding over amazing craters, plains and mountain tops.

Other features of the Red Planet include the intriguing dark lines on its surface which scientists think are caused by trickling water just beneath the surface.

The glorious images are complemented by sound effects including the occasional blast of rocket thrusters.

The compelling end result took three months to create.
