The quake occurred near the Meixco-Guatemala border. (USGS) 

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.9 has been recorded near the Mexico-Guatemala border, according to the US Geological Survey.

The earthquake occurred at 1.29am local time (5.29pm AEST) with an epicentre 8km south-west from the Guatemalan city of Tajumulco, and was estimated at a depth of around 111.5km.

The Tajumulco Volcano is located near the epicentre.

A second magnitude 5.0 tremor was also recorded nearby around 30 minutes later. 

No tsunami warning has yet been issued.
