US comedian Stephen Colbert has crashed the stage at the Republican National Convention and made fun of Donald Trump, while dressed as a Hunger Games character.

Colbert took to the stage at the venue in Cleveland, Ohio, last night, and reprised his regular Late Night segment called “The Hungry for Power Games”.

He wore an outlandish fluorescent blue hairpiece, parodying the host character from the dystopian The Hunger Games film series - Caesar Flickerman.

Colbert then unleashed a takedown of Republican nominee Donald Trump and his running mate Mike Pence.

“[Trump] has formed an alliance with Indiana Governor Mike Pence,” he said.

He then dropped his head, seemingly falling asleep at the mention of Mr Pence’s name.

“Sorry, I blacked out there for a moment. It is my honour to hereby launch and begin the 2016 Republican National Hungry for Power Games!”

As he was escorted offstage by security, Colbert delivered his punchline.

“Look, I know I’m not supposed to be up here, but to be honest, neither is Donald Trump,” he said.

Colbert will broadcast live from the Republican and Democratic conventions, and will be joined by former Daily Show colleague Jon Stewart.
