Australian and international stars have walked the red carpet for the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts International Awards.

It's the Aussie take on Hollywood's night of nights - where a panel of Australian judges decide what movies and stars have shone the brightest.

Some big names walked the red carpet - among them Hugh Jackman, who despite his plethora of awards and nominations, says tonight's best actor nomination is a highlight.

And while the awards aren't as glamorous as some, they're a night of fun.

"It's different. First of all it's in a carpark, you can't see it but turn around. It's perfect, we'll get out of here quickly. Look i think there's an esky of beers over there," Jackman said.

For many of the stars, this is the first major red carpet of awards season.

Monday's Golden Globes will be the big event, and this year they'll be a much more sombre celebration.

It follows a year where Hollywood lost some of its shine, plagued by sex scandals that saw big names like Harvey Weinstein fall from grace.

And many women, including Australian's Nicole Kidman and Abbie Cornish, will wear black in solidarity.

High Jackman says he supports the movement and that now is the time for men to listen.
