Skydiver left paralysed after sickening mid-air collision

A US skydiver has been left paralysed from the waist down after he was knocked out thousands of metres above the ground in a sickening mid-air collision with a fellow thrill-seeker.

Visiting Florida from Mexico, Sebastian Leal, 23, was one of several adrenaline junkies diving in wingsuits high above Zephyrhills late last month when the "freak accident" happened.

"I remember leaving the airplane, and then approximately five seconds later, we collided," Mr Leal, whose GoPro captured the moment of impact, told Fox13.

"I hit some powerlines before I hit the ground. My next memory is lying on the ground in pain."

The 402 jump veteran was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital with four broken vertebrae; but despite being unable to use his legs, he is adamant that he will be back hurling himself into the big blue as soon as he is able.

"What happened to me is very unlikely. It's a freak accident," he said. "I am optimistic that one day I will fly wingsuit again.

"There are other skydivers who have been handicapped and who have been able to get back on their wing suits, which is inspiring to me," he told ABC Action News.

The other diver was also hospitalised after the incident.
