A surfer who had his leg torn open by a shark in Hawaii took a selfie of the gruesome bite only moments after it happened.

John Braxton, 27, was swimming at Upolu Point in Kohala on Sunday afternoon when a four-metre tiger shark bit him, Star Advertiser reports.

"I just got attacked by a tiger shark, hoo!", Mr Braxton says into the camera as he is loaded into an ambulance on a gurney.

Mr Braxton then turns the camera to film his mangled leg, with his thigh having a sizeable and bloody chunk torn out.

"Love you, my brother," says a friend watching on.

"Love you too, bro," Mr Braxton replies.

Mr Braxton uploaded the gruesome video to his Instagram page a few hours after the attack, but has since taken it down.

Mr Braxton reportedly swam to shore after being attacked, before his friend called emergency services.

He was airlifted to North Hawaii Community hospital in a serious condition.
