Luck has finally run out for a Russian businessman who survived a number of previous assassination attempts but was shot dead in his car over the weekend.

Zulfuqar Asadov, 32, was gunned down on Saturday night as he got out of his Lexus near a home in Volgograd, in Russia's south west, Life News reports

Only days after his death three men were sentenced for their roles in an assassination attempt on the retail entrepreneur in June last year.

Asadov was lucky to survive the attempt on his life as he sat in his car.

Footage of the encounter shows a car pull up in front of him to block the road before a masked gunman armed with an AK-47 opens fire through an open back passenger window.

However, the businessman was armed with a shotgun and returned fire immediately which caused the would-be assassins to flee.

The attack that killed Asadov was remarkably similar to last year's failed attempt with the entrepreneur targeted as he got out of his car.

But this time Asadov appeared to be unarmed and his dashcam captured him let out a dying scream after being struck by a number of bullets.

Asadov was also targeted by assassins in 2010 and was involved in a long running feud with other ethnic Azeri and Caucasian wholesalers over who would have the right to sell cucumbers imported from Iran.
