Rio officials lock themselves out of stadium

A gate to an Olympic stadium in Rio had to be peeled open with bolt cutters after officials lost the key.

The incident was recorded by a BBC reporter outside the Maracana Stadium on Wednesday, prior to the women’s football match between Sweden and South Africa.

"What a start! #Rio2016 kicking off with lost key and firemen forcing open lock to east gate of Olympic stadium #oops," BBC reporter Julia Carneiro posted on Twitter.

Spectators were reportedly forced to queue up for more than an hour while officials scrambled to find the key to unlock the gate.

It is just one of many bungles Rio has faced in the lead up the global event.

Athletes have taken to Twitter with their frustrations over poor accommodation and facilities.

Earlier this week it was revealed swimming athletes could risk becoming sick if they inject just three teaspoons of water due to dangerously high toxin levels.
