Residents of a Peruvian city were shocked to find a drunken, near-naked, mud-covered man passed out in a local river.

Cajamarca locals feared the man who was lying submerged in the muddy river had died and alerted police.

Once they had arrived on the scene, police pulled the man from the river and hosed him down before taking him to the hospital.

Local media have named the man as Jorge Luis Villanueva Anticona, 25, according to the Daily Mail.

Mr Anticona was believed to have been suffering from severe hypothermia and a source claimed authorities feared he was in danger of dying from alcohol poisoning.

"I didn't do anything," Mr Anticona is heard saying in video footage of his rescue.

It is unknown why Mr Anticona had tried to enter the river in the first place.

His aunt, Adela Anticona Rutia, said her nephew had come to the city to celebrate a relative's birthday.
