Queensland wife awaits word of husband amid Cyclone Pam's fury

A Queensland woman is facing a panicked wait after losing contact with her husband who is stuck in the heart of cyclone-battered Vanuatu.

Tahnia Cook and her husband Cameron operate a small resort on the Pacific island but now Ms Wood is unable to contact her husband as Cyclone Pam moves across the island.

“He was going to bunker down in a brick house 200m from the water's edge and when things got bad, he would go into a storage container with two local villagers - I have not spoken to him since,” she told 9NEWS.

“Last time we spoke the waves were very high.”

Ms Wood had returned to Brisbane for a medial issue just before Pam started to move on Vanuatu and said she now holds grave fears for her husband and their local friends and employees.

The pair moved to Vanuatu recently to establish the resort in North Efate and Ms Wood said they had become good friends with the locals.

“The local villagers are our family now and I know the area well enough to know that their houses would not have been able to withstand the force,” she said.

“I am in grave fear for my loved ones.”
