Queen Elizabeth spent a night in hospital after cancelling a planned trip to Northern Ireland, Buckingham Palace has confirmed.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said the 95-year-old monarch has now returned home to Windsor Castle and had attended the hospital for "practical reasons".

"Following medical advice to rest for a few days, The Queen attended hospital on Wednesday afternoon for some preliminary investigations, returning to Windsor Castle at lunchtime today, and remains in good spirits," the spokesperson said.

This comes after the Queen 'reluctantly' accepted medical advice to rest for a few days and has cancelled a trip to Northern Ireland.

Buckingham Palace said she was disappointed that she could not visit Northern Ireland for engagements Wednesday and Thursday.

"The Queen sends her warmest good wishes to the people of Northern Ireland, and looks forward to visiting in the future,'' the palace said.

Her admittance is understood not to have been related to coronavirus.
