Pro skier's cliff plunge mid-competition caught on helmet cam

A Russian professional skier has emerged surprisingly intact after he fell down a rocky cliff side during a competition in Austria last week.

Ivan Malakov was descending a slope while competing in the Freeride World Tour event in Fieberbrunn when he mistimed a turn and fell into a dangerous roll on March 8. 

Malakov posted helmet camera footage of his gut-wrenching fall to his YouTube account last Thursday, where it has since been viewed more than 75,000 times.

The video features Malakov grunting repeatedly in pain as he tumbles over rocks, tumbling over and over as the momentum carries him down towards the foot of a slope. 

The video then cuts to Malakov resting on the ground, talking to a medical official.

“I think I’m okay… it’s hurting, but not so much,” he said, before being winched to safety by a helicopter.

Malakov later shared a photo of an x-ray taken as part of a subsequent medical examination to his Instagram account, assuring his fans that “nothing is broken, I feel bad, but I hope for a quick recovery”.

He finished up sixth in the Fieberbrunn competition, which was taken out by Swedish skier, Kristofer Turdell.
