A Canadian man was left bloody-nosed after setting out to see if Canadians are suffering from Islamophobia following last week's fatal shooting.

Michael Zehaf-Bibeau was shot dead by police in parliament in Ottawa after killing a soldier on Wednesday in what authorities called a "terrorist attack".

But the social experiment shared on YouTube proved its citizens are still willing to leap to the defence of someone being discriminated against.

So much so that the man carrying out the experiment ended up being punched in the face by an unknowing citizen after demanding that an actor dressed in robes vacate a bus stop.

"This is based on the events that happened in Ottawa," filmmaker Oma Albach said.

"We're going to see if people feel safe to be around Muslims or people that look like Muslims."
