Police officer shoots US high school student

A knife-wielding 14-year-old student is in a critical condition after being shot by police at a Nevada high school.

Reno Police told media the Hug High School student was taken to hospital in a critical condition after he was shot by an officer on Wednesday morning.

Neither the student or the officer that shot him has been identified, ABC 8 reports.

Police Chief Jason Soto told a press conference the 14-year-old student had been involved in a fight with another classmate before arming himself with the deadly weapon.

A video posted to YouTube shows the teen threatening other students in the school before being shot by police.

The officer can be seen kicking one of the weapons away before performing CPR on the teen until paramedics arrived.

Jiselle Mandugano, 17, told the Reno Gazette-Journal she was outside the school cafeteria when the shooting took place.

"The other kid tried to avoid it (the knives). I didn’t see him get shot. I just saw him fall to the floor," she said.

"I was scared. I don’t know what I was feeling."

Another witness said the officer shot the knife-wielding student in the shoulder.

A lock-down placed on the school shortly after the incident has since been lifted.
