Plane struck by lightning mid-flight

The moment a passenger plane was struck by lightning as it made its way over Iceland has been caught on camera.

The WOW Air flight was heading from Reykjavík to Paris on Monday when it was hit, RT reports.

The Airbus A330 was flying in heavy rains when it was struck by a long bolt of lightning, causing onlookers to erupt in screams and laughter at witnessing the rare spectacle.

Despite the jolt the plane named the TF-GAY was able to make the journey to Paris without incident.

WOW Airlines named the aircraft the GAY in support of LGBT rights, with the Airbus making regular flights to San Francisco.

Planes are made of sealed aluminium, which keeps the lightning outside and allows them to withstand strikes.
