Two pelicans have made an unexpected grand entrance at a graduation ceremony, causing a flap among the crowd.

The outdoor ceremony at Pepperdine University in California over the weekend was interrupted by a pair of the squawking birds.

Student Grant Dillion posted a video to YouTube, showing the pelicans landing among the audience, only to be thrown back in the air then land on the ceremonial red carpet.

The class of 2018 and their guests were momentarily seen ducking for cover from the long-beaked birds.

“When your university is located next to the Pacific Ocean, at some point pelicans are bound to crash your graduation,” Mr Dillion captioned the video, which has received over 80,000 views.

Security guards were quick to step in and attempt to remove the birds but after one pecked at a guards hand, they stepped back.

Instead, the bird waddled away with the guards close by.

The graduation MC continued to read out graduates’ names but after the distraction , it seems the crowd couldn’t sit still.

As one lady was heard saying in the video, “that was crazy”.
