Iconic fashion designer Oscar de la Renta dies aged 82

Renowned fashion designer Oscar de la Renta has died after battling cancer at age 82.

His wife Annette Reed confirmed to the New York Times that the designer passed away at his Kent, Connecticut home yesterday.

De la Renta was diagnosed with cancer in 2006, however a cause of death is yet to be revealed.

Just last week he confirmed designer Peter Copping would succeed him at his label, Vogue reports.

In a statement about the appointment, he said: "My hope is that, in leading this selection, and actively participating in the transition, I can ensure the right design future for our company and brand."

The Dominican Republic native rose to international fame in the 1960s as one of the first designers to dress American former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy.

He become renowned for his glamorous gowns and sophisticated daywear, which adorned the likes of first ladies to Hollywood's A-listers.

Former US secretary of state and first lady Hillary Clinton recently introduced a retrospective of his designs, saying "His name alone evokes elegance and timeless beauty. And his design give each of us a chance to feel like we're special, too."

A young de la Renta launched his ready-to-wear label in 1965 in New York and went on to work for Paris fashion houses Balmain and Lanvin.

His most recent high profile design was Amal Clooney's wedding dress and the designer starred alongside the bride in a Vogue photo shoot at her final fitting.

De la Renta married Francois Langlade, editor of French Vogue, who died in 1983. He is survived by his second wife of 25 years, philanthropist Ms Reed.
