Good Samaritan shot dead trying to help fellow victim during Texas robbery

A person has been shot dead in the US after trying to help a fellow victim during an attempted robbery at a shopping centre in Texas.

San Antonio Mayor Ivy Taylor confirmed the shooting at the Royal Oaks Mall was “deadly” and police are searching for a suspected second shooter.

"Today's deadly shooting at Rolling Oaks Mall is a tragedy for everyone involved and all of us affected," Ms Taylor said in a statement posted on Facebook.

"As SAPD and Live Oak Police continue to search for a second suspect, ensure the safety of mall employees and shoppers and clear the scene, I ask everyone to remain calm, vigilant, safe and report any info you may have about the suspect who remains at large."

The attempted robbery happened at a jewellery store inside the shopping centre, NBC reports.

One suspect is in police custody.

The police chief, William McManus, said the person who was killed was simply trying to help another victim.

“This is absolutely senseless,” he said.

“This is the second time a Good Samaritan is killed while trying to help a victim.”

The suspect was shot by someone in the store who had a concealed carry license, police confirmed.

At least 28 police units are at the shopping centre after receiving reports someone had let off a number of shots around 3.26pm local time.

A Rolling Oaks Mall employee told KENS5 News they heard six shots on the first floor of the building before helping people to escape the building.

Witnesses took to social media to warn locals to not visit the shopping centre.

One woman said a man started shooting near a children’s play area inside the building.
