Obama and Prime Minister Turnbull will meet next week

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will meet US President Barack Obama for the first time in his capacity as Australia’s leader next week.

The pair will meet during the APEC Summit in Manila, the Philippines, next Tuesday, the White House confirmed.

The counter-ISIL campaign and Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) may be up for discussion.

“During the course of our visit to Asia, the President will hold a number of bilateral meetings with key allies and partners, including the leaders of Australia, Canada, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia,” US National Security Advisor Susan Rice said.

“We clearly co-ordinate very closely with the Australians on many issues, including the counter-ISIL campaign, our commitment to maritime security and TPP, of which Australia is a critical member.”

Mr Obama will attend the G20 Summit in Turkey before the APEC meeting, and will go on to the East Asia Summit in Kuala Lumpur.

While in the Philippines, Mr Obama will participate in an event to “showcase US maritime security assistance to the Philippines and the region,” Ms Rice said.
