North Korea grants Kim Jong-un a new made up title

North Korea's absolute ruler has been given a brand new title and then hosted a massive parade to brag about it.

On Wednesday the Supreme People's Assembly (SPA) made the unanimous decision to appoint the nation’s leader Kim Jong Un to hold the title of Chairman.

He replaces the country's National Defence Commission as the supreme policy making body.

Thousands of military personnel and government officials gathered to mark the announcement.

SPA president Kim Yong-nam said the appointment of Un was the "unshakable faith and unswerving will of all service personnel and people of the country to uphold Kim Jong-un ... at the top post of the DPRK." KCNA new agency reports.

Under the control of Un, the new SPA commission comprises of three chairmen responsible for all aspects of national and military affairs.

A professor at the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul, Yang Moo-Jin told the Guardian: "This marks a clear departure from the era of his father".

"By making himself the head of an umbrella commission with control over the military, party and government, Kim Jong-un has become supreme leader in both name and reality."

North Korea has become more than an idle concern for western nations, particularly the US over the years as it ramps ups research into nuclear weapons.

While the country technically possesses the capability of building a nuclear bomb, speculations remains as to whether North Korean has a stable means of delivery.

Global media outlets have maintained a close eye on the small secretive nation which has made several failed missile launch tests in recent months.
