British tourist flew home on the wrong passport

A British man has flown from the Czech Republic to the UK on the wrong passport after accidentally taking his friend’s.

Allan Poole, 43, from north-east England, travelled from Prague to Newcastle via Amsterdam on a KLM flight, reports the Independent.

Despite at least four passport checks and scans during his journey, the mistake was never picked up.

Border security officials who checked his passport in the Netherlands and the UK did not identify the error.

KLM staff at the boarding gate in Amsterdam also never realised the name on his boarding card did not match the passport.

Mr Poole’s friend, Steve Vincent, 43, is now stranded in Prague and awaiting an emergency passport from British diplomats.

Mr Vincent tweeted KLM, asking what action the airline was taking to fix the issue after they allowed Mr Poole to travel on his passport.

He said: "Hey KLM you let my friend travel from Prague to Newcastle on my passport (after we swapped by mistake).

"You shouldn't have let him on the plane. I'm trapped in Prague. What are you going to do about it?"

Mr Poole said no one noticed he was travelling on the wrong passport and he only realised himself after he returned to the UK.

“I even failed the e-passport gate in Amsterdam and went to a booth and was waved through.”

“At Newcastle control they looked at the passport and waved me through.”

The pair were on a weekend visit to Prague when they accidentally swapped passport while checking into their accommodation.

A British Embassy spokesman said it took two working days to process an emergency passport and cost  £100 ($180).
