New Zealand appears twice in world map, delighting Kiwis

New Zealanders are celebrating after discovering a map from 100 years ago features two identical representations of their country.

The topographical map of the world, dating back to 1920, shows New Zealand on both the right and left flanks of the poster presumably due to a printer error.

The map, produced by Stanfords in London, was celebrated by Kiwis on Reddit as being ultra-rare – largely because cartographers have a celebrated history of leaving the land of the long white cloud off official maps.

"This is getting out of hand, now there's two of them!" wrote one commenter.

"Just one," wrote another. "The other is the old Zealand."

Two months ago Russian media outlet RT mistakenly labelled New Zealand on a map as Japan, a move that saw the network officially apologise to New Zealanders.

"Our American early morning news team suffered a little geography mishap," a spokesperson for RT said in a statement.

In February giant Swedish homewares company Ikea omitted the country from a world map print sold in Australia.

So often was it discovered that New Zealand was being left off world maps that Kiwi comedian Rhys Darby teamed up with Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to launch a tongue-in-cheek campaign called "#GetNZontheMap".

The pair described the regular omissions as "the next great conspiracy: New Zealand is disappearing off world maps".
