Body of New Zealand monk identified month after disappearance

The body of a young New Zealand monk who went missing a month ago from a Scottish monastery has been identified after being found off a remote island.

Scottish authorities identified the body to be that of 24-year-old Justin Evans, also known as Brother Ignatius, more than a month after he disappeared from a remote monastery on the Scottish island of Papa Stronsay.

The body was found on May 6 near where Evans went missing on April 11.

Police searched the areas around the Golgotha Monastery on the Orkney island of Papa Stronsay, but he was presumed dead by the Catholic Church.

The 24-year-old left Christchurch, New Zealand, to become a member of a Catholic congregation focused on missionary work in Scotland.

"The death is being treated as unexplained. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal in due course," Scottish authorities said.

Evans, who also played for Marist Albion Rugby Club, is being remembered by the team as a "beloved club member and terrific young man".

"Justin was a member of our Colts and premier sides, who both won championships, showing Justin's talent and commitment."
