Two dead after shooting in New Zealand, man in custody

Two people have been found dead by police after reports of a shooting in New Zealand, with a man taken into custody.

A spokesperson said police responded to reports of shots outside a house in Glendene, in West Auckland, on Friday afternoon.

When police arrived, two people were found dead.

Police then blocked Taikata Road in Te Atatū Peninsula, where a man was taken into a police car in handcuffs.

Detective inspector John Sutton said a man has been taken into custody after the incident and a homicide investigation is underway.

"He is being spoken to in relation to the two deaths," Sutton said.

Cordons will remain in place on Barrys Road and locals will see an increased police presence in the area.

"Police understand this was an alarming incident for local residents and we would like to reassure the community that at this stage, we are not seeking anyone else."

A Barrys Road resident said her husband witnessed the shooting.

"He heard the gunshot, then the woman screaming, and then they got away in a car," she said.

"It's awful. He'll be hearing those screams for a while."

Another nearby resident said the road has been closed off and armed police were on the street.

He said there were four ambulances at the scene.

A Te Atatū Peninsula resident said the entry to Taikata Road was blocked by a marked police car, at the roundabout where it joins Te Atatū Road.

At least half a dozen police cars had been seen in the surrounding streets on Friday afternoon.

Two cars were stationed further up the main road, near a petrol station.
