New footage reveals the dramatic raid that took down notorious drug kingpin ‘El Chapo’

The moment Mexican Marines closed in on the world's most wanted drug lord – El Chapo – and stormed his hideout in the country's north-west, has been revealed in newly released footage.

The footage shows the Marines moving through the building, blasting through walls and tossing grenades as part of an operation codenamed Black Swan

The raid sparked a fierce firefight that led to the injury of one Marine and the death of five of El Chapo’s henchmen.

While the cartel kingpin – real name, Joaquín Guzmán - managed to slip away through a sewer, he was captured nearby a short time later

Six people were also arrested and a large cache of weapons, including a rocket launcher, were seized, according to the Mexican government.

The news comes almost seven months after Guzmán’s second escape from the country's toughest jail in July.

The drug lord used a motorbike hidden on an underground tunnel to break free.

There are suggestions his recent interview with actor Sean Penn may have helped lead to his recapture.

El Chapo is being held in the same prison from which he made his most recent escape, while US authorities organise his extradition.

The drug lord is wanted in a number of states for his involvement in organised crime and drug trafficking.
