A South Carolina woman forced to evacuate her home as Hurricane Matthew bore down on the state has watched her home being looted on security footage.

Angela Jones left her North Charleston house on Thursday with her husband and two children ahead of the powerful storm, ABC News 4 reports.

“My husband and I left town because we have two small kids, one actually with a heart defect, and we didn't want to run the risk of something happening and not being able to take care of our babies,” Ms Jones said.

Before leaving the house, Ms Jone activated their home security system, which has a motion-sensor and sends alerts to a phone when there is an intruder.

“We were here with some family outside of town and our phone notified us there was activity within our home,” Jones told the station.

Security video shows a woman creeping around the living room and leaving with a handful of belongings, locking the front door behind her.

The video has been viewed on Facebook more than 1.1 million times.

It is believed the woman stole some clothes and blankets.

“She was only in the house a couple of minutes but hopefully police will be able to find her,” Ms Jones said.
