James Foley was working in Syria as a journalist when he was kidnapped two years ago.

Hundreds of mourners have gathered at a memorial service in New Hampshire for executed journalist James Foley on what would have been his 41st birthday.

Foley was abducted in Syria in November 2012 after working as a freelance war correspondent. In August, video was released of Foley being executed by an ISIL militant.

Hundreds of mourners including family, friends and colleagues packed the church in Foley's hometown of Rochester to farewell the slain journalist, New England Cable News reports.

"I will never make complete sense of why Jim died," Michael Foley, his brother said at the service.

"But he did not die in vain, he reminded us simply that good does triumph over evil."

Reverend Marc Montminy, a friend of the family, said Foley "gave voice to people and places where there is no free speech or free press."

"He gave his life because of it," Rev Montminy said.
