Three dead after gunman opens fire in Montreal

A police officer has been killed, a civilian has died, and a second officer has been injured after a gunman opened fire in a busy Canadian suburb.

The chaos began shortly before midday on Monday in Côte-des-Neiges, Montreal’s most populated neighbourhood. The assailant has since been shot dead by police.

Police were first alerted after a witness reported seeing what appeared to be a firearm protruding from a window and hearing gunshots.

The attack prompted a massive emergency response.

Officers flooded the area as authorities issued an urgent public alert warning residents about an armed suspect on the loose.

Traffic on a nearby motorway was halted, and metro services were temporarily suspended.

The emergency warning was lifted later in the afternoon after police located the suspect and shot him dead.

Authorities believe the gunman, who was allegedly armed with a long weapon, acted alone.

Meanwhile, an injured officer remains in the hospital, and the officer who was killed has not yet been publicly identified.

The tragedy marks the first time in 24 years a Montreal officer has been killed in the line of duty.

Investigators are still working to determine what led to the attack.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was “horrified” by the attack.

“My gratitude is with our courageous police officers whose heroic dedication protects our communities.”

Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada also condemned the violence, saying that “such acts have no place here.”
